Memorial Day 2015

The weather was perfect for the 2015 Annual Community Memorial Day Ceremony and over 350 citizens showed up for this patriotic event sponsored by Forest Meadows Funeral Homes. After welcoming remarks from the Jon Thomas family, members of the Milton Lewis Young Marines presented our nations colors. Ray Davis, Sons of the American Revolution, gave a very moving “Toast to the US Flag” followed by Ms Dorene Webster proudly singing our National Anthem.

After posting the colors the crowd listened to remarks from several politicians and VA officials including County Commissioner Lee Pinkoson’s views on how Americans are reacting to civic problems occurring in their neighborhoods. His remarks drew a standing ovation from the crowd. Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell proudly displayed pictures of her parents, who both served in our Armed Forces in years past. She then moved the crowd with her sincere appreciation for all those who gave their lives defending our country. Our good friends Rick and Patti Fabiani then spoke about the success of the Gainesville Fisher House and the need for continued support. Other events included a special flag folding ceremony and concluded with the ever emotional “Laying of the Wreath” honoring the over 267 Alachua County men and women who gave their lives serving our country. Members of American Legion Post 16 Legion Riders then served up a plentiful BBQ compliments of Forest Meadows Funeral Homes.

Our veteran community continues to be very active with numerous patriotic events on the horizon. Both VFW Post 2811 and American Legion Post 16 will host events commemorating National Flag Day with demonstrations on how to properly retire worn and tattered US flags. On July 18th members of all local K-9 law enforcement agencies will be honored with a banquet to be held at American Legion Post 16 starting at 5:00 pm. Forest Meadows is one the sponsors and encourages community participation to show appreciation to those that keep our homes safe. Korean War Veterans, Chapter 267, invites all to participate in a new veteran’s monument dedication on Archer Rd, scheduled for July 27th at 10:30 am. Plans to renovate the County Veterans Memorial, in Kanapaha Memorial Park, continue with completion still planned for this Veterans Day. To learn more about any of the events contact Forest Meadows Veteran’s Representative Jim Lynch at 352-538-3119.
