A. George Battisto, formerly of Hyattsville, Maryland, died July 5, 2013, at the University of Florida Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. He was 92.
He was the first born child of Italian immigrants Camillo and Maria Cianci Battisto of Albany, NY. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, served during WWII in the South Pacific with the First Marine Air Wing on Guadalcanal SI, and later became an instructor at Quantico Marine Corps Base. He retired from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission in 1992. He was a life long member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fly Away Radio Control Club of College Park, MD. As a Little League baseball coach for the Green Meadows Boys Club, he received trophies for coaching season champions and all star games.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Marion Wheeler Battisto, his son Michael C. Battisto and his mother Mary Lois Williams Battisto, his sister Ann and her husband Al DiBella, his brother Joe (Betty) Battisto, and his sister-in-law Pat (Mike) Battisto.
He is survived by his daughter Nicola B. Sorenson and grandson Christopher D. Glover of Gainesville, FL, his stepdaughter Donna (Randy) O’Steen and sons Ethan and Brandon of Point of Rocks, MD, his brother Mike Battisto, sister-in-law Betty Battisto, and the DiBella and Battisto nephews and nieces, all of the Albany, NY area.
A graveside military ceremony with Marine Honor Guard was held on July 14, 2013, at Maryland National Memorial Park in Laurel, MD. Funeral arrangements were made by the Forest Meadows Funeral Home in Gainesville, FL, and Gasch’s Funeral Home in Hyattsville, MD.
