Eleanor Jean Burns, formerly of Fort Lauderdale, passed away peacefully on July 6th at Harbor Chase of Gainesville. Eleanor, daughter of Paul J & Julia Bartovich Walters, was born on March 24, 1926, in York Run Pennsylvania. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from State Teacher’s College, California, Pennsylvania, and attended Nova University, Davie Florida for Masters of Curriculum and Instruction. Eleanor began her teaching career in McKeesport, PA and continued in Fort Lauderdale as Primary Specialist until she retired in 1987. and moved to Gainesville. She was a volunteer at Kimball Wiles Elementary – where she was Volunteer of the Year. She spent her summer’s traveling the United States (all 50 states) and the World. Her favorite countries were Greece, England, and Australia. She traveled with her daughter to horse shows and was center ring coordinator for the Citrus Cup Regional horse show. Eleanor loved to play the slot machines and during her travels frequented casinos across the US and even found one in Australia. Being an avid Florida Gator football fan, Saturdays were spent tailgating, attending home games and the National Championships. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert J Burns and her 5 brothers. She is survived by her daughters Alicia (Ron) Davis and Amber (Bill) Hipp, Grandchildren Christopher Davis, Katherine Hipp (Jesse) Vasquez, Kelli Hipp, Kimberly Hipp, and great grandchildren Lillian and Mae Vasquez. A Funeral Mass will be held at Queen of Peace Catholic Church 10900 S. W. 24th Ave, Gainesville FL on Friday, July 23rd at 11AM In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Haven Hospice of Gainesville.
