Dr. Eleanor M. Schenck, entered into eternal rest on November 3, 2014, in Gainesville, Florida. Eleanor was born on October 29, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to Mickey Marshall and Dorothy Marshall. She was preceded in death by her father, who died fighting for his country in World War II, and her mother, Dorothy. She is survived by her four children, Steven, Thomas, Keith, and Megan, and five grandchildren.
Eleanor came to Florida in 1955 and settled in Leesburg Florida. She moved to Gainesville in the 1960’s. She graduated with a PhD from the University of Florida and was an educator. As the author of “Reading America”, she delighted in being the “teacher who taught teachers to teach.” After she retired from teaching, she worked as a representative of Aid Association for Lutherans for several years.
For many years, Eleanor was a member of First Lutheran Church in Gainesville. Before that, she was instrumental in founding Bethany Lutheran Church in Leesburg, Florida. She enjoyed being active in the church and serving the Lord, Jesus Christ.
A Funeral Service for Eleanor will be held on Monday, November 10, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at Forest Meadows Funeral Home, 725 NW 23rd Avenue, Gainesville, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in honor of Eleanor to First Lutheran Church (352-376-2062) or to the University of Florida, School of Education (www.uff.ufl.edu/OnlineGiving).
Eleanor was good hearted and very thoughtful with my mom and me. We saw her often at the Senior Center. She gave us mom’s favorite word puzzle book, photos of mom and other mementos. She told me about the Center for Independent Living for some of my patients. She gave me a copy of her book. I have a photo of Eleanor from one of mom’s birthday parties and if I can find it one at the Senior Center that I would like to send to you if you would like to give me your email address. I visited Eleanor at her home and often thought of visiting her in the past four years since my mom passed away in 2010. I will tell Roberta who visited Eleanor since then and others from the Senior Center of her passing. My email is [email protected].
