Gwynn S. Smith 79, of Gainesville, Florida passed away on March 5, 2013.
Gwynn was born to Jim and Alma Smith on April 1, 1933 and was the oldest surviving child of nine loving sisters and brothers: James Travis (deceased) Melba (deceased,) Faye, Norma, Sandra, Jimmy, Sidney (deceased) and Jan. She attended business college in Jacksonville, Florida and started her career at the University of Florida in 1958 in the Department of Agriculture Economics, which transitioned to the founding of IFAS. Through her years with IFAS, Smith held many titles as she progressed through the system. She retired as executive assistant and served (and they would argue “trained”) five different vice presidents. She touched every part of IFAS and saw the administrative unit heads change in every unit at least twice. She served a total of 48 years with the state, 45 with IFAS and 3 with the state treasurer in Tallahassee.
She was a loyal Gator fan and loved to fish, camp, cook and spend time with family. She enjoyed singing and listening to Big Band Jazz, gospel music and the Praise Choir.
Gwynn is preceded in death by her husband, Archie Smith, parents Jim and Alma Smith, older sister, Melba, and baby brother, Sidney. She is survived by her children, John Webb (Andrea) and Patricia Glenn (Rick), grandchildren Scott Webb, Ashley Lockerman (Kevin), Jared Jones, and Patrick Webb; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Arianna, Stacey, Sarah, Ryan, Olivia, and Madelyn.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Azalea Trace at The Village, Haven Hospice, Grace United Methodist at Fort Clarke, and First Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held at Grace United Methodist Church at Noon on Saturday, March 9, 2013, with the Funeral Service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. Senior Pastor Rick Thompson will be officiating. A private burial will follow at Forest Meadows West. Arrangements are in the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Home.
