Jerry Richter Ovesen of Ocala, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. He was 72 years of age.
Jerry was born at Fargo, North Dakota, on February 10, 1940 to Karl and Pauline Ovesen. He grew up in Fargo and was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at First Lutheran Church of Fargo. He graduated from Fargo High School in 1957.
Jerry graduated from North Dakota State University in 1965. After graduation he went to work for IBM in Rochester, Minnesota, in the Programming Center. He worked there as a staff programmer in Report Program Generator Development. He received as award in recognition of the key part he played in the architectural definition, design, and development of DOS Disk Operating System) RPG11. Jerry retired from IBM in 1995.
While at the university and working for IBM, he also served in the North Dakota Air National Guard.
Jerry loved flying radio control model airplanes, playing softball and golf, working with electronics, singing and listening to Gospel music.
Jerry moved to Ocala, Florida to enjoy retirement and to play golf and softball year round.
Jerry is survived by two sisters, Bette Ann (Daryl) Pring of Gainesville, Florida, and Kay (Keith) Berg of Grand Forks, North Dakota. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Pauline Ovesen,
Jerry’s final resting place will be at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo, North Dakota.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM, Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, Gainesville, Florida.
