Katherine Pope Hearn was born in Cusseta Georgia on November 18, 1924 to Franklin and Mara Perdue Pope.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, James M. Hearn Jr.  She is survived by her three children, James M. Hearn III of Gainesville, Steven R. Hearn of Gainesville, and Jan Hearn Clayton (Bobby) of Merritt Island, Fl.; granddaughters Jaki Mokry (Ben) of Spring, Texas; Natalie Clayton (Roger) of New York, New York; Haley Boswell (Patrick) of Atlanta, Ga.; Annie Dawson (Walker) of Melbourne, FL. Katherine has 7 great grandchildren, 13 nieces and nephews.  She was the last living of her 6 siblings.
Katherine graduated from Cusseta High School and Columbus College of Columbus Ga. The worked for the Civil Service in Ft. Benning and California.  Upon marriage to Jim, she became a dedicated Army wife as Jim served in Japan and Korea with the CIC. They moved to Gainesville in 1962, where Jim taught ROTC at U of Fla.  As faculty they attended many UF games and became avid Gator fans, unless the Gators were playing Auburn ( Jim’s alma mater) or Georgia, where they would become a divided household for game time. Katherine’s greatest loves were her family, by whom she was loved as Wife, mother, sister, aunt and daughter. She also loved flowers, genealogy, bridge, reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles.  She instilled the love of reading in her grandchildren through her many hours of reading to them with her expressive manner.  She is also known for her great storytelling abilities, and was known to entertain if not scare her nieces and nephews with her tales. 
We are all very grateful for the care she received by Laura Traughber and Ashley, as well as other employees of Home By Choice.  We are also grateful for the wonderful care she received in her last days at North Florida Regional Medical Center and Haven Hospice. 
There will be a memorial service at 5:00 PM, Saturday, June 14, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Gainesville. Katherine will be cremated and her ashes placed beside her husband, James, in the Veteran’s Military Garden of Honor at Forest Meadows.
