Margarita Chambers, age 87, died Thursday, October 2, 2014 at E.T. York Hospice Care Center.
‘Margo’ was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to Spain at the age of 4. She returned to Havana at the beginning of WWII in Europe. At the end of the war she went back to Europe and spent a year in Spain and France.
At 21 she came to the United States to continue her education at Sacred Heart College in Belmont, North Carolina. She earned a degree in Business. Shortly after graduation she met Howard Chambers, a Navy flier back from four years of duty in the Pacific.
Eight months later they were married and living in Miami, Florida where they resided for the next 53 years. Margo and Howard had two sons shortly after moving to Miami.
Margo continued her education, receiving a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Miami, and a master’s degree in learning disabilities from Nova University.
Margo taught the physically impaired at Tropical Elementary School in Miami for thirty years. Some of her students remain her friends.
After her retirement, Margo and Howard volunteered a Fairchild Gardens and the Public Library in Miami.
In 2006 they moved to Gainesville to be near their sons. Since Howard’s death in 2012 Margo has suffered multiple health problems. Now the lovers are together again.
Margo is survived by her sons Edward Chambers and Alex Chambers, (Rhonda), and her grandchildren Annie and Aaron, all of Gainesville, as well as her brother Eric Beraza, her sister Maura Capetillo, both of Miami and her sister Isaura Aja of Cuba.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 6th at the Chapel in the Meadows, Forest Meadows Memorial Park Central (4100 NW 39th Ave) at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to E.T. York Hospice Care Center.
