Marjorie Lynch Bartley was born above the family bakery in Kansas City, Missouri, Marjorie was a city girl from the beginning. From a young age she was allowed to ride the trolley by herself on downtown shopping expeditions. Of course she worked in the family business after school and enjoyed free access to the many pastries and doughnuts available. Following graduation from East High, she went off to college with her best friend Edith. Met at the train station by a rakish fellow who scared them half to death with his driving, she advised Edith to never date such a boy as Rogers Bartley. Two weeks later, ignoring her own advice and better judgment, she accepted her first date with that very rascal. During college, she was known for her calm manner and crazy sense of humor. Also a beauty, she was elected May Queen during Senior year. Following graduation with a B.S. in Business Administration, she subsequently moved to Gainesville and married in 1942. She worked at the University of Florida until her first baby, Becky Lu in 1943.
Marjorie was a charter member of Campus Church of Christ and a faithful member of the church throughout her life. She loved to read her Bible and found great comfort in the Psalms. She was actively involved in ministry with the married college students. She was renowned for her hospitality and her great cooking. She often hosted showers, parties and Bible studies, She always had ready words of wisdom, comfort, and advice for those who were in need of such.
Besides her devotion to God and family, she was an avid Gator fan, especially football and basketball. She was an accomplished seamstress, making her own clothes as well as those of her children. She enjoyed wearing her unique creations, knowing they were one of a kind.
She will be fondly remembered for her grace, wit, hospitality, and kindness.
Marjorie was 94 years old and had enjoyed good health for most of her life. She passed away peacefully from natural causes at Haven Hospice Care Center on Sunday, December 30th, 2012.
She is survived by sons Dr. Rogers Bartley, Jr. (Cherise) and James David Bartley (Andrea); grandchildren Jennifer Owens (Neal), Jonathan, and Kellam Bartley; Stephen, Britt, Matthew, and Jenya Bartley; and great-grandchildren Nathaniel and Natalie Owens, and Logan Bartley.
She is predeceased by parents, Ernest W. Lynch and Lulu Blanche Himes Lynch; daughter Rebecca Lu; husband, Rogers Bartley, Sr.; brothers Winfred and Alfred Lynch.
Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 5th, at the Campus Church of Christ, 2720 SW 2nd Avenue at 11:00 AM. Instead of flowers, those who wish are asked to make contributions in memory of Marjorie Bartley to Christian Family Services, 2720 SW 2nd Ave., Gainesville, FL 32607 or Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606.
