Sarla Ramayya, 90, of Gainesville, FL passed away at North Florida Regional Medical Center on December 7, 2018. She was surrounded by her family.
Sarla was born in Kotgarah Himachel Pradesh, India on April 12, 1928 to the late Sukh Daval Sharma and Mathura Devi. She immigrated to the United States after a highly successful educational career in India. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. After living in Canada, she then moved to Gainesville, Florida on July 4, 1972. She was employed by the Alachua County School Board and was an esteemed teacher for over 40 years in Gainesville. Sarla was a member of the Sri Sathya Sai Center and the India Cultural and Education Center in Gainesville. Sarla had a passion and love for teaching. She did not retire from teaching until she was 87. She loved her family and friends and her beautiful home. She loved her gardens and flowers. She still enjoyed going to the Gainesville Health & Fitness Center in Millhopper. Sarla recently spent three months in Nashville with her son’s family, but returned to her home, that she cherished as soon as the weather turned cold. She loved traveling and visited six continents with her late husband, Divakaruni Ramayya who passed away on March 5, 2010.
Sarla is survived by her children: Harsha Ramayya and Deepti Piziak. Her four grandchildren Adriana Piziak, Elizabeth Piziak, Margaret Ramayya and Brent Ramayya. Her daughter Sunita Ramayya passed away in 2013.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 15th at 9:30am at Forest Meadows Funeral Home Chapel at 725 NW 23rd Avenue Gainesville, Florida. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Home, Gainesville, FL.
